Over a century ago, Dr. Maria Montessori, an educational pioneer, opened her first program for developmentally normal children. Previously, she had achieved high levels of academic success with both developmentally delayed children, something which had not been considered possible among education experts of the day.
Montessori’s approach was based on the simple concept of tailoring education to children’s natural tendencies instead of imposing rules of the adult world. Montessori observed that children are extraordinarily curious and physical, and she sought to encourage these attributes instead of inhibiting them. Montessori realized that children learn best by discovery and through repeated experimentation. These observations led her to develop materials that concretely illustrated abstract principles of mathematics, language, and science and contained a built-in control of error to allow the child to self-correct.
Island Village early childhood program is not a daycare but a school setting suitably designed for young children
Young children thrive on consistency, which is why we require full day attendance Monday through Friday. The youngest children rest in the afternoon and participate in art and music as well as physical education and recess. In this way, students navigate and master critical social as well as academic skills that prepare them for kindergarten and beyond.
